Manual

User manual

This is the practical operating guide: quick start, LIVE vs POST, signal flow, section behaviour, workflows and troubleshooting.

Fastest way in

AUTO tools are starting points. They only make a decision when they hear suitable material: if the evidence is weak, a tool leaves its settings unchanged, and that is intentional.

Quick start

Six steps to first sound

The manual's shortest useful path through the plugin.

  1. Insert PublishMode on a vocal or voice track.
  2. Choose LIVE while recording or monitoring through the plugin.
  3. Choose POST while editing, mixing, or rendering.
  4. Play a clear, representative phrase and run MASTER AUTO for a conservative starting point.
  5. Adjust the enabled sections by ear.
  6. Use the section AUTO GAIN switches (Mic Pre, EQ, Dynamics, Tape) and Output AUTO so louder is not mistaken for better.

Modes

LIVE tracks. POST finishes.

The mode switch is a workflow decision, not just a quality label.

LIVE

Use LIVE when latency matters: tracking, monitoring, streaming and broadcast. LIVE adds zero samples of latency, forces oversampling off, and uses zero-lookahead versions of Tuning, De-Esser and Limiter. Clean is Gate-only in LIVE; Deroom, Denoise, Click, De-Breath, Harmony and Character wait for POST.

POST

Use POST for editing, mixing, rendering and final delivery. POST enables the full-quality chain, reports latency to the DAW, and is the mode to use when printing final results.

Gain matching

Hear colour, not just louder.

The current manual separates the gain-matching tools because each one moves at the speed its section needs.

Mic Pre Auto Gain

Continuously keeps the section output close to its input. It is on by default, so Drive and Mix can be judged by tone rather than apparent gain.

EQ Auto Gain

Continuously matches EQ output near its input for fair Tone, Cleanup and Colour decisions. It is on by default.

Dynamics Auto Gain

Restores average compression loss slowly while voice is present and holds through pauses, rather than chasing each word.

Tape Auto Gain

Matches loudness around the complete tape stage. It deliberately moves much more slowly than the other section matchers.

Output Auto

Enables a safe limiter setup, measures a short pass and matches processed output to the plugin input without forcing a quiet source toward an arbitrary target.

Signal flow

The full processing order

This is the complete manual signal flow, including tuning and creative effects. The De-Esser PRE/POST switch moves it before or after Dynamics.

Sections

What each stage is for

Short operating notes from the manual, trimmed for quick scanning.

Input

Prepare level, HPF and LPF before the rest of the chain. Input AUTO sets conservative gain and voice filtering from the material it hears.

Clean

Gate, Deroom, Denoise, Click and De-Breath reduce unwanted noise early. Delta helps check that cleanup is removing noise, not performance.

Mic Pre

Tube, Transformer and Solid State styles add harmonic colour before tone shaping. AUTO GAIN keeps its output near its input loudness so louder is not mistaken for better.

EQ

Tone handles broad Body, Clarity and Air. Cleanup handles mud and boxiness. Colour adds guarded Warmth, Honey, Bite and Silk. AUTO GAIN keeps EQ output near its input for fair tone decisions.

De-Esser

Targets S, SH, CH and bright mouth noise with focused detection. AUTO needs real sibilant events and should not guess from silence.

Dynamics

Combines fast Peak control with smoother Level riding. Peak into Level is usually clean; Level into Peak can feel denser. AUTO GAIN restores average compression loss slowly without chasing each word.

Tape

A complete machine stage with subtle character even at zero settings. 30 ips is tighter, 15 ips is balanced, and 7.5 ips has broader low-end bloom. AUTO GAIN slowly loudness-matches the whole section.

Vocal Suite

FX opens tuning, harmony, character, delay and reverb. The suite master and individual module switches must both be on.

Output

Finishes the chain with Trim, Push, ceiling, limiting and lookahead. Output AUTO matches processed loudness to the input. Keep the limiter as a safety net.

Workflows

Common jobs

Use these as starting checklists, then use your ears.

Recording a vocal
  1. Switch to LIVE.
  2. Use Input AUTO or set input gain manually.
  3. Use LOWCUT or a gentle manual HPF only if needed.
  4. Use light Gate and Live Safe Tuning if the performer needs them.
  5. Keep Harmony, Character and analysis cleanup for POST.
  6. Switch to POST after recording for final cleanup and polish.
Mixing a lead vocal
  1. Save the session and switch to POST.
  2. Run MASTER AUTO over a representative phrase.
  3. Review Clean first and use Delta.
  4. Shape Mic Pre and EQ at matched loudness.
  5. Tune De-Esser using a phrase with several clear esses.
  6. Balance Peak and Level in Dynamics until the vocal stays present without sounding squeezed.
  7. Add Tape, then Vocal Suite effects only as needed.
  8. Use Output AUTO for a fair final bypass comparison.
Fixing harsh esses
  1. Find a phrase with several clear S or SH sounds.
  2. Run De-Esser AUTO.
  3. Turn on Delta.
  4. Adjust Frequency until Delta mostly contains the harsh esses.
  5. Raise Amount only until the edge settles.
  6. Turn Delta off.
Cleaning noisy dialogue
  1. Use POST, and save your project or session first.
  2. Choose one Clean tool at a time and run its AUTO over representative material.
  3. Wait until map-based controls report ready.
  4. Raise Amount conservatively while checking Delta.
  5. Add Gate only for the remaining gaps, not as a substitute for every cleanup tool.
  6. Use Output AUTO before judging the result.
Tuning a sung vocal naturally
  1. Select the Natural tuning style.
  2. Set the known Key and Scale, or run Find Key on a clean pitched passage.
  3. Start with moderate Amount, slower Attack, high Smooth and high Natural.
  4. Reduce Range if you only want nearby notes corrected.
  5. Check transitions, scoops, vibrato and held notes before increasing Amount.
Adding clear vocal space
  1. Open FX and select Natural Space, or start from the Delay and Reverb presets.
  2. Set Delay and Reverb Mix for the gaps between words.
  3. Raise each Duck control until the lead remains clearly in front.
  4. Adjust Predelay and the Delay division for the song tempo.
  5. Check the wet tails during pauses as well as during full instrumentation.

Troubleshooting

When something feels off

The fixes below cover the most likely beta-test support moments.

The plugin sounds distorted

Lower Input gain, reduce Mic Pre Drive, Tape Sat or Push, Character Drive or Output Push, keep the limiter on as protection, and look for clipping before PublishMode in the DAW.

AUTO says it needs voice

Play a section with clear normal singing or speech, avoid long silences before the voice starts, and rerun AUTO on a representative phrase.

The gate cuts off words

Lower Gate amount, increase release, and use less aggressive cleanup before compression.

Cleanup sounds unnatural

Reduce Denoise, Deroom, De-Breath or Click amount. Use Delta to check whether vocal tone is being removed.

Effects are not audible

Open Vocal Suite with FX, turn on the suite master switch and the individual module, raise that module Mix, check that the full plugin is not bypassed, and switch to POST for Harmony and Character.

Tape does not null with every control at zero

This is expected. Enabling Tape engages its baseline machine path even at zero user settings. Sat, Push, Tone, Bias, Bump, Wow and Flutter alter that base sound; they are not the on/off switch for it.

Duck makes the vocal seem quieter

Delay and Reverb Duck do not lower the dry lead. They reduce the wet return while words are present, so the combined meter reading can fall even though the lead stays unchanged. Compare the dry lead with the ambience modules bypassed.

Latency is too high

Switch to LIVE while recording, confirm the quality display says OS OFF, and disable lookahead-heavy processing elsewhere on the monitored path. Use POST only after recording.
